Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind

More than 174 years after the original Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind was established, students and faculty still enjoy the same lush countryside views and access to the historic campus structures, which have remained largely unaltered since its construction began in 1839. 

Following the 2008 consolidation of two Virginia Schools for the blind, deaf and multi-disabled, VSDB engaged in a 3-year phased project that is inclusive of 18 separate buildings. The  renovations and additions marked the growth of the ever-expanding student population and the success of the school itself. While preserving the features that are unique to the 19th Greek Revival style campus, we were also able to integrate low voltage and M/E/P systems, include ADA upgrades, construct blind and deaf dorms, classrooms and learning centers with state-of-the-art educational resources specific to the needs of students and staff.
