James Madison University

Originally built in 1917 and designed by renowned architect Charles M. Robinson, JMU's Alger Hall, formerly known as Spotswood Hall, underwent a substantial renovation managed by Kjellstrom + Lee to preserve its historic character while enhancing functionality for today's campus needs. The residence hall retained its iconic bluestone exterior while receiving updated student accommodations, including a large lounge, laundry facilities, and dining spaces. The project also created new office space for the Madison Center for Civic Engagement, complete with conference rooms and support areas. Significant infrastructure upgrades included new mechanical and electrical systems, a chiller, air handling units, generators, and transformers, supporting the building's long-term performance and reliability.
