Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center

As part of UVA Cancer Center, the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center offers the most advanced cancer treatments available in an environment that is convenient and comfortable and designed totally with its patients in mind.

Continuing with this approach, K&L constructed an interior fit-out in the Center using existing unused space and renovated it into a 24,000 SF infusion center along with a 4,200 SF USP 800 Complaint Pharmacy (located on the first floor of the Center) which contained Bio-Hazard Drug, Hazardous Drug, and Non-Hazardous Drug work rooms in addition to associated support space.  Dedicated HVAC equipment to provide low temperature/low humidity space control; HEPA-filtered air handling units and terminal diffusers; chemical fume hoods and bio-safety cabinets; contaminated exhaust systems with dedicated fans and stainless, fully-welded ductwork; and Pyxis dispensing cabinets and pharmacy level access control were all part of K&L's construction package for the Center.  During the summer of 2020, K&L returned to the Center to renovate the second floor, replacing infusion bays and pharmacy space with exam rooms and clinical work areas.

In a related project, K&L undertook the conversion of an existing linear accelerator vault on the ground floor into a new treatment center.  The concrete vault, which had been shell space, was constructed earlier in anticipation of a linear accelerator and required significant modifications for the planned equipment.  This included tie-ins to the existing HVAC, electrical  and plumbing systems.  Components of this work also involved selective demolition, concrete work, reworking masonry, and radiation shielding.  The new work also included new floors, ceiling, architectural woodwork, door hardware, finishes and painting.
