This new four-story, 70,000 SF, state-of-the-science School of Nursing is located on the VCU Health Systems' MCV campus in downtown Richmond. The steel structure is enveloped with brick, cast stone, and curtainwall systems. The mansard roofing system hides the state-of-the-art roof top units. The challenges to the construction not only included the normal lack of staging area for a city job, but the safety concerns due to an active child care center less than twenty feet away.  The building includes research space, a clinical learning center with human patient simulators, a community outreach nursing center, large classrooms, and faculty offices.  In the new facility, students learn on sophisticated human-patient simulators that can be programmed to show symptoms of certain conditions and diseases and to respond to various interventions, such as medication. In the 150-seat auditorium students are able to watch others working on the simulators and use hand-held devices to indicate whether they agree or disagree with a particular intervention.  The new nursing education building is the cornerstone to VCU's ability to expand enrollment, attract faculty, and educate students with the latest knowledge for a technologically intense healthcare environment. This new building has added much-needed research space to allow the faculty and students to conduct research from bench science to the bedside.
